Musiala Chooses Germany After Considering England

Initially, Jamal Musiala had intended to represent England; however, his decision was altered by an intervention from Joachim Low, the manager of Germany at the time.

He played for Germany and England during his adolescence.

Joined Bayern from Chelsea in 2019.

Explanation for Germany's decision to move

What occurred?

Bayern Munich's star player was born in Stuttgart but relocated to England at seven. After playing for Germany and England at the junior level, the attacking midfielder reportedly aspired to a career with the Three Lions. All of that altered, however, when Low encountered the teenager after his 2019 transfer from Chelsea to Bayern. Low and the academy director of the German team persuaded him that playing for Die Mannschaft was the right decision.

His previous school coach, Andrew Martin, told The Sun, "It was inevitable that England would win." I vividly remember conversing with him and his father, Daniel Richard. At Under-15s, Jamal represented both nations, but it was reported that he preferred England. He felt more at ease there, as he had previously played for Chelsea and was acquainted with other Chelsea players in the England squad and with others from the academy circuit. But unfortunately for English football, Jamal declined to contract with Chelsea at 16 and instead relocated to Bayern Munich. However, I know this resulted in a complete 180-degree turn of events. He participated in the Bayern academy circuit and played for the team.

Bayern clearly defined the path. At the time, I recall Jamal's visit to Bayern to meet with Jogi Low and the academy director. A distinct pathway was established for him to gain entry into the Bayern first team and the German first team. When you meet the first-team manager as a 16-17-year-old, your decision is already made for you. I am impressed that they took the time to do that. He initially desired to play for England; however, the transfer to Germany influenced his decision, with the assistance of Low and the Bayern setup. They paved a clear path for him, and a year later, he was playing for the Bayern first team—the most effective course of action.

What's the next step?

Musiala, capable of operating as a winger on either side of the field, is anticipated to commence at the Westfalenstadion in Germany's last-16 Euro 2024 match against Denmark on Saturday evening. A quarterfinal match against Spain or Georgia awaits them if they overcome that obstacle.
