Carvajal's Euro Final Fate Hinges on Red Card; UEFA Rules Explained

For Spain's Euro 2024 semi-final, Dani Carvajal was suspended.

Dani Carvajal was unable to participate in Spain's Euro 2024 semi-final; however, is it possible that he will be able to play against England in the final?

England secured their spot in the Euro 2024 final with a 2-1 victory over the Netherlands on Wednesday.

In Dortmund, Gareth Southgate's team fell behind early on. However, Harry Kane promptly equalized from the penalty spot after being caught in the area.

England's performance during the initial half of the tournament was their most impressive; however, they progressively retreated into their own half as the Netherlands pursued a victory following the break.

Cole Palmer and Ollie Watkins were introduced by Southgate with 10 minutes remaining in the match. Watkins scored the game-winning goal in the 90th minute by firing a shot into the lower corner.

On Sunday, England will compete against Spain in Berlin for their second consecutive Euros final.

The semi-final between Spain and France was also an entertaining match, as Spain came from behind to win 2-1 on Tuesday.

Robin Le Normand and Dani Carvajal were suspended, while Pedri was sidelined due to an injury.

Carvajal was suspended following his dismissal during Spain's quarterfinal victory over Germany. The Real Madrid full-back was cautioned during extra time, and he was subsequently issued a second yellow card for tripping Jamal Musiala.

Nevertheless, Carvajal's initial yellow card in that match resulted in a suspension, as it was his second of the tournament.

Dani Carvajal was dismissed during the match against France.
Regrettably for England, the 32-year-old will not be required to serve two distinct suspensions, as UEFA does not combine suspensions for yellow and red card accumulation.

UEFA's regulations regarding suspensions do not specify a "one-match ban" as the penalty in either scenario; instead, they stipulate that a player will be suspended for "the subsequent match in the competition."

UEFA has the authority to impose additional suspensions in response to red cards issued for "serious offenses." However, Carvajal's dismissal does not qualify as such.

De La Fuente will have the option of utilizing Le Normand in addition to Carvajal following the conclusion of his one-match suspension.

Pedri, who sustained a knee injury that terminated the tournament in the quarterfinals, will not be present for Spain.

After a steward collided with him following the semi-final, whether Alvaro Morata can play is uncertain.
