Colombia advanced to the Copa America semifinals after defeating Panama 5-0 on Saturday night in the quarterfinals.
Los Cafeteros jumped out to an early lead, with Jhon Cordoba scoring in the eighth minute. A James Rodriguez corner kick found the forward's head, and the goal established the tone early.
Rodriguez then extended their lead in the 15th minute from the penalty spot, with Los Cafeteros' skipper scoring and assisting early in the game. Colombia added a third just before halfway through Liverpool winger Luis Diaz, who lobbed the goalie after some excellent service from Rodriguez with a cheeky attempt.
Panama made a few halftime adjustments, but it was too late, as Colombia's three-goal first half told the story. They scored a fourth in the 71st minute with a long-range strike from Richard Rios and a fifth in the 92nd minute after Miguel Borja converted a penalty late.
MVP: James Rodriguez.
So, who is the tournament's MVP thus far? He's certainly in the running for it.
On Saturday, he recorded his fourth and fifth assists of Copa America 2024 while also scoring his first goal. He put on a passing clinic, was an expert at dead ball set-piece attempts, and led his country to their 27th consecutive unbeaten encounter—a work well done.
