In response to a fan who said he had "hit rock bottom" after seeing a photo of him "grafting" on a construction site, Danny Drinkwater has taken offense.
The 34-year-old former Leicester City midfielder, who had been without a team since being released by Chelsea in 2022, declared his retirement from professional football last year.
After losing his passion for the game, Drinkwater, who won a Premier League championship with Leicester in 2016, opted to hang up the whistle despite several offers from Championship teams.
He declared, "I'd just like to announce my retirement from professional football," in an interview with The High Performance podcast.
"I think it's appropriate to really announce it now, even though it's probably been a long time coming, especially with the past year.
"Saying it then feels like picking at a nerve, even though I didn't believe it would upset me. The fact that I didn't stop at my peak and that it has somewhat subsided has, I think, prepared me for it.
Drinkwater continued: "I think I've been in limbo for too long; I've either wanted to play but not getting the opportunities to play at a level where I felt valued."
In an interview with Sporty360, the former midfielder for Manchester United he also talked candidly about his career. In this instance, he acknowledged that, following such a fruitful period in football, he was at ease with retiring.
"Football has given me some absolutely great years," the man stated. I've had some terrible experiences with it, but overall, the good years have exceeded the bad.
"I was able to purchase my parents' ideal cottage. Am I going to sit here and say football is sh** since I can take care of my family? Not a chance. Has this been the best for me and my role thus far? Completely Was it a childhood dream? Totally."
"I'm not going to sit here and complain, but the last three years have been the hardest in terms of football," he continued.
In addition to discussing his football career, Manchester-based Drinkwater was transparent about his non-football endeavors, such as remodeling several local homes.
According to a recent Instagram post, the 34-year-old is still active in the real estate industry and frequently gets his hands filthy on construction sites.
Drinkwater wrote, "On site today," under a photo he shared of himself. One fan responded, "F***** h*** Danny, you've hit rock bottom [crying face emoji]."
Drinkwater said, "Some of these messages, behave," after reposting the message on his Instagram story. I enjoy being the site grafter. It's an option."
