The transfer of Mason Greenwood to Marseille has resulted in a €6 million loss for Manchester United.
According to the Times, United will not receive the entirety of the €32m transfer fee that Marseille paid for the forward.
Rather, Getafe will receive €6m of the funds due to a sell-on clause negotiated during the signing of Greenwood on loan last season.
Greenwood played for the Spanish club Getafe during the 2023-24 season.
He contributed six assists and scored ten goals in 36 appearances for the club, ultimately placing 12th in the La Liga table.
A permanent sale from Manchester United will now aid Getafe, as they could not afford to retain him.
Greenwood departs from Manchester United.
Greenwood, who has signed a five-year contract with Marseille, was placed on the market after it became apparent that he couldn't resume his career at Manchester United.
Since his detention in January 2022 on suspicion of rape and assault, Greenwood has not appeared for Manchester United.
The charges against the Englishman were dismissed last year after critical witnesses withdrew, and he subsequently resumed his career in football with a loan stint at
Lazio, Juventus, Napoli, and Borussia Dortmund had all been associated with the acquisition of Greenwood in recent months; however, Marseille ultimately concluded the transaction.
Manchester United can re-sign Mason Greenwood in the future, as Marseille has incorporated a repurchase clause into his contract.
Nevertheless, it is improbable that they will activate that.
Before his off-field issues, Greenwood was anticipated to become a significant player for his club and country, scoring 35 goals in 129 appearances for Manchester United.
Roberto De Zerbi, the manager of New Marseille, is exceedingly pleased with the acquisition of Greenwood.
He told the media, "Mason is a player of the highest caliber."
"I am not accustomed to becoming involved in the personal lives of my players, and I am unaware of the circumstances that transpired." However, you must know I regard all my players as my offspring. I can reprimand them in private but never confront them in public.
Greenwood has earned one cap for England; however, it is difficult to envision him returning to the national team.
