Antony Blames Off-Field Issues, Ten Hag Role for Poor Season

Antony, a forward for Manchester United, says he has grown up since the poor 2023–24 season.

The Brazilian winger talked about his problems at Manchester United and said his personal life was to blame for his foul play. Antony took a month off in 2023 to deal with claims that he had raped several women.

The 24-year-old also said that head coach Erik ten Hag made him mad by putting him at left back a few times last season.

On the other hand, the player from Ajax says he is set on being successful in Manchester and will do everything he can to help the team improve under the Dutch coach.

"I expect a lot from myself," he told The Athletic. "I wasn't happy with my season, but a lot happened in my personal life over the year." Everything I did changed the sound, no matter how I felt.

I'm done with that now, and a new season has begun. I'm focused on what I want and have a strong mind, so I know this season will be very different... I've grown and changed because of everything."

When asked to play left back, he said, "Last season was interesting." I played fullback and was a little uneasy about it because when your team is losing or drawing, you want to be on the attack to help them win.

Being moved to defense bothered me a bit; you get mad during the game, but it's all good afterward... I really care about Erik a lot."

Antony helped set up 15 goals in 2022–23, but he only did so five the next year. Fans may start to understand why Manchester United paid so much for the winger if he can return to the form that made him so good in the Eredivisie with Ajax.

They have seen how unhappy he looks on the field.

Antony worked out with Manchester United during the off-season and will be looking to start in the Premier League opener next Friday against Fulham.

The Athletic reported that the player is still being looked into in connection with the attack on three women.
