Arsenal Faces Defensive Setback, Arteta Urges Patience

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta told Takehiro Tomiyasu to be "patient" as the defender gets ready to miss a few weeks with a knee problem. Tomiyasu has been hurt a lot lately.

The former Bologna player has had many health problems during his three years at the Emirates. However, Arteta has seen how useful he is when fully fit since he joined in 2021.

Tomiyasu quickly became a fan favorite in North London thanks to his mobility, defensive skills, and friendly personality. In the 2023–24 season, Arteta often chose him as his first-choice left-back.

But the Japanese player hasn't been seen in preseason because of a knee injury, and he wasn't even at Arsenal's 2-0 win over Lyon in the Emirates Cup on Sunday.

Arteta told the reporters after the match that he couldn't give any good news about Tomiyasu's health and that the 25-year-old isn't likely to return for a few weeks.

Arteta gives Tomiyasu and Jurrien Timber new information

"Yes, I believe that one will take weeks to finish." "I believe it will require a few weeks of patience and hard work," Arteta said.

Two flexible defenders, Jurrien Timber, and Tomiyasu, missed the game against Lyon. Timber missed most of the 2023–24 season because he was still healing from a terrible ACL injury.

Since then, the Dutchman has had a minor foot problem that is thought to be linked to his recovery. Arteta hopes Timber will be ready for the first weekend of the Premier League season.

"That's okay. It's now clear that he's been working on his own. He hasn't told us anything, so we think he'll be ready to train with the group next week. "That's good news," the Gunners manager said.

Because Timber and Tomiyasu were both hurt, Riccardo Calafiori was able to make his Arsenal start on Sunday. He came off the bench just after the hour mark and took over at left back for Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Arteta "loved" how fans reacted when Calafiori was introduced.

Fans at the Emirates gave Calafiori a loud welcome when he moved to a central position in the dying minutes. He was aggressive and on the ball for the first 30 minutes of his Gunners career, stepping in several times to win back the ball.

Arteta couldn't say enough good things about how the fans reacted when Calafiori was introduced. He thinks fans' love would go a long way toward getting other players to join the club.

"I love it so much." It's great when fans act that way toward one of our own. You know right away that it's love, he's cared about, and they're behind you. "What a great way for many players to join our team," Arteta said.

"It's great that he can play a lot of different positions. He can fill many different roles, especially in attack, because he's a real defender." He's amazing when you see him, hear him, and see how he goes to the duels. His work from last year is precise, and I believe he can improve us as players.

Arsenal has five days to rest after winning the Emirates Cup before their first Premier League game of the 2024–25 season, which will be at home against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
