Chelsea Criticized Over Gallagher Transfer Handling

The "pity" is the Conor Gallagher transfer situation, which has compelled the Englishman to return to the UK after being forced to play for Atletico Madrid, according to Emmanuel Petit, a former key player for Chelsea.

When Gallagher turned down a new, shorter-term contract at Stamford Bridge—his present terms are up in 2025—the Blues accepted a £34 million offer from Atletico Madrid to sign the academy product.

After completing his transfer to the Wanda Metropolitano, Gallagher wasted no time getting to Madrid. Atletico Madrid teased his arrival on social media with a photo of the 24-year-old soaking up his new digs.

But now, unexpected problems with the sale of Samu Omorodion, a striker for Atletico Madrid, to Chelsea—who were supposed to pay a comparable sum for the young Spanishman—have put Gallagher's future to Madrid in serious doubt.

Chelsea and Omorodion reportedly had a stalemate in their negotiations over a contract, casting doubt on Gallagher's future. At the same time, Atletico Madrid paid an upfront fee of €75 million (£64.4 million) to acquire Julian Alvarez from Manchester City.

Petit "lost" as Gallagher returns to England by airplane
The Spanish giants had intended to pay Gallagher with the Omorodion money. Still, both teams are rushing to devise a new strategy, which may involve Joao Felix returning to Stamford Bridge.

While this is happening, Gallagher is back at Chelsea and will presumably train with the Under-21s this week after supposedly being barred from using the first-team facilities during the whole affair.

Petit has spoken out against the Blues' treatment of the Englishman. In an interview with Sports Mole, he told BetVictor that he understood the fans' frustration and admitted to being "lost" in the transfer saga.

"I feel sorry for myself," Petit remarked. The English players are crucial to the club's identity and the support of the supporters, as I know from personal experience.

So, this guy has been a Chelsea player for a long time; he went on loan to Crystal Palace, returned, and performed admirably, and now you're telling him he needs to leave because you need money?

Let me apologize. Over the previous two years, how much has your budget been? This is your way of saying "thank you" after I've given my all on the field for the past two seasons?

Gallagher should have been placed on Petit's transfer list. In addition, he was seeking the same thing that all outside players do: an eight-year deal. This individual thought the club would treat him somewhat, but they gave him a different impression. This saddens me.

The news reports said, "You were told to return to London because the transfer had not been completed; there was an issue; I don't understand." I found this surprising as I followed the news. I wouldn't put Gallagher on the market for a transfer right now. I get where the fans are coming from. I'm confused; I don't understand.

Allegedly informed that he would only be a squad player under Enzo Maresca, Gallagher was one of Chelsea's most significant players last season under Mauricio Pochettino despite contributing seven goals and nine assists in fifty games.

So, the Blues were only willing to give Gallagher a two-year deal with an extra year's option, but the midfielder insisted on a long-term contract so he could guarantee his future with the team.

It is said that Gallagher has declined the opportunity to join Aston Villa and is willing to stay in West London until his contract expires in 2025, after which he may leave for free.
