Former Defender Slams Chelsea as 'Average' Under Boehly

After Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly said the team has degenerated into an "average club," William Gallas pounced with a vicious attack.

An outspoken opponent of Chelsea and the Boehly ownership regime, the defender did not mince words when he blasted his former club.

Gallas said the current crop of Chelsea players would never have been considered for the squad during the club's heyday. He also said that the west London side has grown 'ordinary' since the US owners took over in 2022.

During his interview with Genting Casino, the Frenchman expressed his perplexion with Chelsea's failure to resolve ongoing issues, which he said have persisted for the past two years.

I really doubt Chelsea will be able to qualify for the Champions League this season, and I think the club is far from fighting for the Premier League crown after all the changes that have taken place in the last few years.

Looking at this team's roster, I need more talent. So many players on the team need to be better to represent Chelsea! As far as I'm concerned, half of these players wouldn't have gotten a bench spot on the top Chelsea teams of the past several years.

A club like Chelsea should always seek to win the Premier League title, but these players must be up to the task. Would you put them in the Champions League? I have my doubts, but we'll find out this season.

It was common for people to be afraid of Chelsea, he said. Our club won every trophy. People all throughout the globe held us in high esteem. Each of these players was a top pick by their respective national teams.

There appear to be few players in this category that might be considered world-class. The new owners have turned Chelsea, a club that won everything before, into a team that wins nothing. Looking at the team, I don't see it changing any time soon, and that's sad.

As hard as it is for me to admit, we are a typical club. This Chelsea is entirely different from the one I remember.

The 2024–25 Premier League season will get underway on Sunday with Chelsea's first match against defending champions Manchester City, following a dismal preseason in which the squad won only one of six friendly matches.
