Oscar Bobb and James McAtee are "adored" by Pep Guardiola and are expected to make a big difference in the first team this season.
A lot of playing time was given to both players during the preseason, and their good play earned them starts at Wembley on Saturday, when the Citizens beat Manchester United 7-6 on penalties to win the Community Shield.
The Red Devils went ahead after 82 minutes thanks to Alejandro Garnacho, but Man City tied the game with one minute left in regulation time. Man of the Match Bobb sent a perfect cross into the penalty area for substitute Bernardo Silva, who was celebrating his 30th birthday, to score with a header, sending the game to penalties.
City's first shot from 12 yards was blocked by Bernardo. Still, Guardiola's team won the penalty shootout in the end, with Manuel Akanji scoring the game-winning penalty to win the club's seventh Community Shield and first since 2019. Bobb
Man City won even though many of their big names weren't there. Rodri, Phil Foden, Kyle Walker, and John Stones are just a few players who won't return until next week after taking a long summer break.
After that, Bobb and McAtee were allowed to show what they could do in the first team on Saturday. Guardiola was very impressed with the youth pair, saying they have shown what it takes to succeed at the club.
Guardiola: "My teammates at Man City can count on Bobb and McAtee."
Reporters asked Guardiola if the two 21-year-olds are good enough to play a big role in Man City's leading team this season. He replied, "They have the standards that we have."
"I've known them for a long time, especially McAtee." Last season, we saw Oscar. The trust of their friends gives them strength. They love them so much. They can count on them.
"In the US, Oscar makes a great game. He didn't play well in his first two games in the US, but he got better every game, and today, he was more like the McAtee he could be.
After a good pre-season and performance at Wembley, Guardiola told Bobb, "We want more," and he wanted him to step up his game even more. When he had the chance to take the ball and run, he wasn't always moving.
The first one or two steps he takes, whether they are left or right, are amazing. He has something that no one else does."
"The goal and how he turns and makes the cross are both perfect." He has great morals and works very hard. He has the skills to do it and can do it more often.
McAtee will stay at Man City, says Guardiola.
Guardiola has stated that he has asked Txiki Begiristain, the director of football, not to send McAtee out on loan for a third season. He spent the first two seasons with Sheffield United.
He said, "He knows all the steps." His time in Sheffield taught him much about how hard football is. To get points. It really helped him.
"Hack the goal when you play in tight spaces. McAtee is good at this in tight spaces." So I told Txiki, "I don't want to loan him out because we need him."
Bobb and McAtee will be looking to get into Guardiola's starting lineup when Man City play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on August 18 in their first Premier League game of the new season.
