Marco Verratti, a former midfielder for Paris Saint-Germain, has reportedly been offered the opportunity to join Liverpool.
After securing a £39m transfer last summer, the 31-year-old is employed by Al-Arabi of the Qatari Stars League in the Middle East.
In doing so, Verratti concluded an 11-year tenure at Parc des Princes, during which he appeared in 416 matches for PSG, winning Ligue 1 on nine occasions and lifting the Coupe de France on six occasions.
The midfielder has an exceptional international record, having earned 55 caps for Italy since his début in 2012, and he played a significant role in Roberto Mancini's team's victory at Euro 2020 three years ago.
Verratti initiated his professional career at Pescara, where he appeared in 68 matches and scored once in the second and third tiers of Italian football.
Liverpool 'offered' the opportunity to acquire Verratti in response to Zubimendi's denial.
Liverpool is one of four Premier League clubs that have been granted the opportunity to reintroduce Verratti to Europe from Qatari football this summer, as per HITC.
The report asserts that the Reds are not actively pursuing any deals; however, they may capitalize on an opportunity if it arises.
Liverpool may need a new midfielder, particularly in light of Martin Zubimendi's decision to decline a transfer to Anfield to remain in La Liga.
Arne Slot, the new head coach of the Reds, is represented by the same agent as Verratti, a former PSG player who may be interested in returning to European football before the transfer window's conclusion.
It was also understood that Arsenal, Manchester United, and Manchester City have been informed of Verratti's availability, in addition to the Merseyside club.
Is Liverpool a suitable destination for Verratti?
Liverpool is currently reevaluating their defensive-midfield options after a move for Zubimendi was unsuccessful at the last minute.
Verratti was a consistent fixture at the highest echelon of European football for over a decade before succumbing to the allure of the Qatari Stars League 12 months ago.
It is evident that the midfielder is deteriorating and would not serve as a sustainable remedy for the Reds, as he was not selected for Italy's Euro 2024 squad.
Several clubs in Serie A have also reportedly been offered the opportunity to sign Verratti, who may not necessarily regard a transfer to Anfield as a fairytale end to his career.
