Liverpool Teen Signs New Deal, Heads to Championship

Lewis Koumas, a winger who is 18 years old, has signed a new long-term deal with Liverpool. He will spend the 2024–25 season on loan at Championship team Stoke City.

The young player, born in 2005, made a name for himself at both the youth and senior levels during the 2023–24 season. Jurgen Klopp gave him his first-team start in an FA Cup fifth-round match against Southampton.

Koumas scored his first goal for the Reds in their 3-0 win over the Saints right before halftime. Jayden Danns scored twice off the bench, and both goals were scored by academy product Koumas.

The Wales player earned two caps and did very well for his country's youth teams. He scored nine goals, set up five others in 15 Premier League 2 games, and scored four goals in three FA Youth Cup games for the Under-18s.

In the second round of that competition, Koumas scored a hat trick as his team beat Arsenal 7-1. In June, he played his first two games for Wales in matches against Gibraltar and Slovakia.

Liverpool sees the attacker as a serious potential star. He usually plays on the left side but can also play in the middle. He played in his team's preseason friendlies against Preston North End and Real Betis to show Arne Slot what he could do.

Head coach at Stoke says Koumas has "huge potential" as Liverpool loan is confirmed

There were rumors that Koumas would sign a new contract and then go on loan to a Championship club for the 2024–25 season.

The Reds have confirmed that the teenager has committed his long-term career to the Merseyside giants and will play for Stoke this season.

Stoke's sporting director, Jonathan Walters, and the former Republic of Ireland international praised Koumas's potential after he joined the team.

He told the Potters' website, "In Lewis, we are signing a player of huge potential, and I'm excited to see what the 24/25 season has in store for him in a Stoke City shirt."

"We're grateful that Liverpool put one of their best prospects in our hands before other clubs were interested." He will be accepted with open arms into the Stoke City family and get all the help he needs to do well with the Club from staff, teammates, and fans.

Koumas probably won't play in Saturday's Championship opener against Coventry City, but the youngster should be able to make his EFL Cup debut against Carlisle United on Tuesday.

The Welsh player is the third Liverpool youth starlet to go on loan this summer, following Luke Chambers (Wigan Athletic) and Fabian Mrozek (Brommapojkarna). On Friday, Billy Koumetio left for Sound to play for Dundee.

This is the last of Spain's summer matches. On Sunday afternoon, Slot's team plays Sevilla in front of an Anfield crowd. A few hours later, they host Las Palmas behind closed doors.
