After Liverpool failed to sign Martin Zubimendi, Arne Slot turned his focus to an existing player on his team.
Concern and apprehension regarding the Reds' no. 6 issue is reasonable in light of Zubimendi's admirable decision to remain at his boyhood club rather than Liverpool.
That is, of course, the idealized version.
We Liverpool fans are understandably disappointed that the deal fell through; this casts doubt on Richard Hughes's ability to lead the club's athletic department, and it feels like deja vu, considering how often this happens when attempting to sign a holding midfielder to Anfield.
Although everyone concerned from a Liverpool standpoint is disappointed, Arne Slot supposedly opted to offer a second chance to a player who many thought would be leaving the club this summer.
Wataru Endo was a significant priority for the Reds' midfield targets to let go of at the beginning of this summer, having been brought in as an emergency signing last summer when those targets fell through.
Endo has been constantly linked with other clubs since Liverpool rejected a proposal from Marseille after he had a rough time against Real Betis and only made occasional appearances for the remainder of the preseason.
According to GiveMeSport, Slot will reportedly give Endo a squad opportunity with the Reds this season since the club can't find a replacement for Ryan Gravenberch in that deeper midfield position.
However, for now, Gravenberch is expected to continue as the first choice.
Endo had a solid first season with Liverpool, earning praise from manager Jürgen Klopp for being one of the most diligent players he had ever encountered. Endo may still be able to perform when needed despite his weak preseason.
He demonstrated sufficient quality in his last season.
