Man United Turns to Berge Amid Ugarte Pursuit

The Transfers Podcast has learned that Manchester United has identified Burnley midfielder Sander Berge as a backup option if they cannot secure a deal for Manuel Ugarte of Paris Saint-Germain.

Berge, 26, is amenable to a transfer in the wake of the Clarets' relegation, and the Lancashire club is seeking to balance its accounts this summer by selling players.

The 23-year-old remains Man Utd's primary midfield target, and the arrival of Joao Neves this week appeared to clear a path to his departure from the Parc des Princes.

The 19-year-old Portugal international has consented to join PSG for an initial fee of €60 million from Benfica. The total value of the transaction is anticipated to reach €70 million with the inclusion of add-ons. This morning, Neves traveled to Paris to endure his medical examination.

Renato Sanches will return to Benfica on a one-year loan agreement as part of the transfer, with his wages being covered by the French Ligue 1 side.

Ugarte is valued by PSG at €10 million more than Manchester United's €50 million offer for the Uruguayan midfielder.

Luis Enrique's team has maintained their commitment to recouping the €60m they paid to Sporting CP for Ugarte last summer, stating that they will not sell at a discount.

Manchester United's pursuit of the midfield
"The PSG stance has been consistent: 'Give us the money we paid to Sporting last summer or we will not sell to you.'" Duncan Castles informs The Transfers Podcast.

"The player is confident that Manchester United's first choice is him, and they are optimistic that a resolution will be reached."

- Manchester United continues to pursue the signing of Manuel Ugarte from PSG.
"However, upon consulting with all parties involved in this transaction, it is not as straightforward as some individuals anticipate."

PSV's Joey Veerman, a Netherlands international who participated in the European Championship this summer, is currently being considered by Manchester United as it searches for alternatives.

Martin Zubimendi is also interesting, although conducting business with his club, Real Sociedad is challenging. Adrien Rabiot is an additional alternative following his departure from Juventus under the freedom of contract.

In January 2020, Berge relocated from Genk to Sheffield United, where he spent two seasons in the Premier League and two in the Championship. Subsequently, he signed with Burnley following their promotion last summer.

Duncan Castles describes Berge as "a taller player, a more elegant player in the midfield, but very adept at retaining possession." "Undoubtedly, he would be a more cost-effective alternative to Ugarte, given his Premier League experience, which includes 66 games in the top tier, three goals, and four assists."

Champions League clubs in Spain and Italy also pursue the Norway international.

Scott McTominay is the midfielder who is most likely to be replaced by a new signing, as it is anticipated that the Scotland international will join another Premier League team this summer.

Fulham have submitted bids of £17m and £20m for their home-grown Scot, which have been denied by Manchester United. However, the Cottagers are expected to submit further offers that fall significantly short of Man Utd's £40m minimum requirement.

Tottenham also maintains an interest in McTominay and could entice him with the allure of European football.
