After much uncertainty about his future, Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United's captain, has finally signed a new deal at Old Trafford, according to the club's announcement.
Speculation has been circulating that the Portugal international may be leaving Manchester this summer, with teams rumored to be monitoring his position closely.
Unfortunately, a move this summer is now out of the question, as Manchester United have confirmed that their captain has agreed to a new contract until June 2027, with one additional year of option.
Rumor has it that the club gave Fernandes a pay raise to bring him in line with Marcus Rashford and Casemiro, two of the highest earners on the team.
"Bruno Fernandes has signed a new contract that will extend his stay with Manchester United until 30 June 2027, with the option for a further year," read Man Utd's official website.
Fernandes is re-signed by Manchester United.
Since Sir Jim Ratcliffe became a minority shareholder, Man United has changed significantly. Fernandes has stated that he is "relishing" the opportunity to lead the club into a new era.
My love for Manchester United is well-known. Wearing this shirt is an honor, and I am fully aware of the commitment and passion needed to represent this fantastic club," the 29-year-old stated on Man United's official website.
Heard my name screamed from the Stretford End, scored a hat trick against Leeds, led the team out at Old Trafford on European evenings, and lifted trophies at Wembley—I've had so many memorable moments here already.
I never would have signed this contract if I hadn't thought my most significant moments with United would still be coming.
"would never be challenging for big trophies in the following years is evident from my conversations with the football leadership and manager. The future is bright, and I look forward to guiding this team to succeed.
Ashworth praises Fernandes, calling him a "brilliant leader"
"Bruno has performed at such a high level with remarkable consistency since he arrived at Manchester United," Manchester United's sporting director Dan Ashworth stated.
Every day, the players and staff are inspired to perform at their utmost levels by him, a brilliant leader who drives the standards.
Bruno's commitment to the club exemplifies what it means to be a Manchester United player. He is still essential to our goals here, and we're excited to work with him to achieve the success this club deserves.
On Saturday, Fernandes set up Alejandro Garnacho for the Community Shield goal, and he scored in the penalty shootout that ultimately led to Manchester City's victory.
After joining Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020, the Portuguese striker played 234 games for the 20-time English champions, contributing 79 goals and 67 assists.
