Martinez to Change Jersey Number at Aston Villa

Emi Martinez has spoken out about his decision to wear an "extraordinary number" instead of the number one jersey for Aston Villa.

His summer with Argentina was fruitful again, as the World Cup winner won the Copa America for the second year.

His reputation as a penalty-saving expert has grown, and he was instrumental in the Albiceleste's 2022 World Cup victory.

Martinez, who was left out of Argentina's Olympic roster in Paris, is ready for the 2024–25 Premier League season.

The decision was made to trade his jersey number from 1 to 23, therefore he will be wearing a different one that season.

The goalkeeper, who is 31 years old, explained to Villa TV why he is trading jersey numbers: I believe we've been in the top spot for four seasons now. I was the number 23 with the national team, and we won every trophy.

This is the exact date of my son's birth. To the fans and Villa, I want to bring a trophy. Changing to 23 is a unique number, and I'll admit I'm a little superstitious.

Since joining Villa in 2020, Martinez has amassed over 150 appearances. His efforts helped Unai Emery's team finish in the top four last season, setting the stage for a return to the Champions League.
