The English players for the Red Devils had a terrible day because Alejandro Garnacho and Oscar Bobb stole the show.
They were immediately let down if Manchester United hoped that Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford would make up for lost time this season.
After a terrible preseason, Manchester United played much better than expected in the Community Shield against Manchester City. However, Pep Guardiola's team returned late to tie the game 1-1, winning 7-6 on penalties.
After Ederson rejected Sancho in the shootout, making it two penalties in a row at the home of football, he was the obvious person to blame. At the same time, Rashford was also to blame because he missed two easy chances in standard time.
Even though they lost, Erik ten Hag's team put on a good show. Casemiro looked much better, and Alejandro Garnacho scored an amazing goal to put United ahead.
Erik ten Hag did not get lucky again, though, as Bernardo Silva scored the equalizer in the 89th minute, a year after his team's surprise FA Cup win. But Sancho and Jonny Evans missed the penalty, which would have given United the lead. Instead, City got off to a great start to the season.
Diego Alejandro Garnacho
The Argentine loves playing at Wembley because he is a man for big events. He scored the first goal in the FA Cup final, and this time, he broke the tie with a magical moment.
It wasn't a surprise that he did what he did; just minutes before, he had turned the ball over for Rashford and watched in pain as his teammate hit the post. Garnacho used his skill to sneak past the City's defense and score with a low finish.
He was also sure of himself when he got his penalty, and it was a shame he couldn't get another medal this time.
Ederson
Though the Brazilian goalie was supposed to leave and move to Saudi Arabia this summer, seeing him in the lineup was fantastic for City fans. It wasn't so great for his teammate Stefan Ortega.
He is now competing with Ederson for the No. 1 spot, but his showing in the shootout showed that he can still get his team over the line when it matters most.
He not only saved Sancho's penalty kick, but he also took one himself and scored. It again showed what a special goalie he is, which is why Guardiola wanted him to stay so badly.
Oscar Bobb
The Norwegian was the best player on City's pre-season tour, and he did it again here in a real game. In the first half, he was electric and caused many problems for United with Jeremy Doku and James McAtee. After Bobb set him up, McAtee hit the post.
Bobb wasn't as good in the second half, but he saved his best play for the end when he tormented Diogo Dalot and Lisandro Martinez to set up Bernardo Silva for the equalizer. It was typical of Guardiola to be pleased with what he saw.
"We need more." He needs to do the things in the last third more often. "He's a little passive when he has the chance to take the ball and go, but he has something special," the coach said.
"How he turned and made the cross for the goal is a huge skill." His work attitude is great, and he presses hard, but he's still in his teens. He can do it, but he needs to do it more often.
Erling Haaland
In pre-season, the Norwegian was in his usual, never-ending form, scoring against Celtic and getting a hat-trick against Chelsea. He was unknown here, just like in the FA Cup final.
During the whole game, Haaland only touched the ball 17 times and didn't have a single shot on goal. It's good that he made his spot kick, and City won the trophy because he would have been blamed otherwise.
He will have to do much more when City plays their first Premier League game next week at Chelsea.
