The football defender announced his retirement on Thursday.

After 23 years of professional football, Pepe, the legendary Real Madrid and Portugal player, announced his retirement on Thursday.

The defender earned 141 international caps and appeared in 742 matches for four organizations, including Porto, Real Madrid, and Besiktas. He made his final appearance for the Selecao in the quarterfinal of the Euro 2024 tournament against France.

Ronaldo, the veteran defender's former Real Madrid and Portugal colleague, shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram as the veteran defender decided to hang up his boots. The star player wrote, "There are no words to express how much you mean to me, my friend."

The most significant accomplishments are my friendship and respect for you, even though we have won everything possible on the field. My brother, you are unique. I am extremely grateful for the assistance you have provided.

The Al-Nassr forward was joined in paying tribute to the 41-year-old by Portugal manager Roberto Martinez and Porto. Martinez conveyed his message in a YouTube video published by the Portugal Football Federation.

He stated, "Today is a very special day for you and your family, as well as for Portuguese football." I would like to extend my warmest regards to you. I will divide my message into two distinct themes. First and foremost, congratulations.

Congratulations on your professional journey, which has been replete with accomplishments, enjoyable experiences, and cherished memories that will endure for your life.

Secondly, I would like to extend my gratitude. I am grateful for your contributions to the national team, particularly during your fifth European Championship, which is unquestionably an example. You have left a legacy for future generations in Portugal.

Congratulations, and I am grateful. May this mark a new chapter in your life, filled with joy and love for your family.

The Dragons, on their Instagram page, stated, "A career and a legacy that will always serve as an inspiration to any Porto fan." There are only two viable responses: "Congratulations" and "Thank you."

It is uncertain whether Pepe will return to football as a coach, pundit, or in another capacity, following an exceptionally successful career that lasted more than two decades.
