Ivan Toney appeared somewhat uncomfortable as he nodded along to chants from Al-Ahli supporters, following his £40 million ($53 million) transfer from Brentford. Having joined Al-Ahli late last month, the 28-year-old has been acclimating to his new environment in Saudi Arabia. A recently surfaced clip shows Toney’s tepid response to fans chanting his name during his initial visit to an Al-Ahli club shop.
Once valued at £100 million by Brentford, Toney attracted interest from major clubs such as Arsenal, Manchester United, and Chelsea. However, as his performance faltered and his contract neared its end, the fervor for the England international diminished, leading to his move to the Middle East. Now, at what could be the peak of his football career, Toney has opted for a lucrative two-year deal in a league of comparatively lower quality.
Toney is anticipated to make his debut for Al-Ahli on September 13, when they face Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League. Currently, Al-Ahli occupies the eighth position in the league table, having secured one win and suffered one loss so far this season.
