Mason Greenwood’s Stellar Form at Marseille Catches the Eye of England’s New Interim Manager

Mason Greenwood has been informed that his performances since departing Manchester United for Marseille have caught the attention of England's new interim manager. The 22-year-old forward, who earned his first and only senior England cap in 2020, has faced challenges off the pitch that kept him from further selection. His return to form last season on loan at Getafe, where he won the club’s Player of the Year award, and his recent tally of five goals in Ligue 1 for Marseille following a £27 million ($36m) transfer, have reignited discussions about his international prospects.

Greenwood’s solitary appearance for England came in a Nations League match against Iceland, from which he was sent home after breaching Covid-19 quarantine rules. Since then, his off-field issues have hindered his return to the national team. However, his recent form in France has not gone unnoticed, with former England and Marseille star Chris Waddle suggesting that Greenwood could be in line for a recall under interim manager Lee Carsley.

In an interview with FlashScore, Waddle expressed his optimism for Greenwood’s future with England: “He’s a very talented player, wearing the number 10 shirt, and England seems to be producing a lot of good number 10s right now. He’s started strong at Marseille, finding the net consistently. The new England manager will definitely be keeping an eye on him."

While acknowledging Greenwood’s success in France, Waddle also highlighted the disparity between Ligue 1 and some of Europe’s top leagues: "The French league is strong, but not as strong as the Premier League, La Liga, or the Bundesliga. However, Greenwood can only focus on performing at Marseille—scoring goals and playing well."

There has also been speculation about Greenwood potentially switching his international allegiance to Jamaica. Their national team is currently managed by Steve McClaren, a former Manchester United coach and ex-England boss. If Greenwood continues to maintain his high standards in France, he could soon find himself with several options regarding his future with both club and country.
