Mats Hummels Joins AS Roma on a One-Year Deal

Mats Hummels has officially joined AS Roma, departing Borussia Dortmund at the close of the previous season. The seasoned German defender has signed a one-year contract with the Serie A club, overseen by Daniele De Rossi. Despite interest from several clubs, including Brighton, Bologna, and Real Sociedad, Hummels has opted for Roma, where he will receive an annual salary of €2 million, as reported by Fabrizio Romano.

Hummels, a World Cup champion, steps into the role previously held by Chris Smalling. Smalling has moved to the Saudi Pro League, joining Al-Fayha on a two-year deal. Roma’s announcement highlighted Hummels' extensive international experience, noting his over 600 career appearances and 16 titles, including the 2014 World Cup.

The official Roma statement lauded Hummels' illustrious career with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich and confirmed that he will don the number 15 shirt, becoming the seventh German player in the club’s history. Hummels may make his debut after the international break when Roma faces Genoa in a Serie A match on September 15.
