Real Madrid's Strategic Pursuit: Rodri and the Future of Midfield Dominance

According to reports from the Spanish outlet AS, Real Madrid is already laying the groundwork for a significant transfer next summer, aiming to secure Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies. But their ambitions don't stop there. The club is now setting its sights on Rodri, a strategic move in their long-term planning. With the impending retirement of Toni Kroos, a player whose influence on Madrid’s midfield has been immense, the club is on the hunt for a successor of equal caliber. Rodri, widely regarded as one of the best in his position, has emerged as a top priority to fill this crucial role.

At 28, Rodri is at the zenith of his career. By the time the 2025 transfer window opens, he will be 29—the same age Zinedine Zidane was when he joined Real Madrid in 2001. Although his current contract with Manchester City extends until 2027, the club has been keen to secure his future by offering him a lucrative new deal. However, the Spanish midfielder has yet to commit, igniting speculation about a possible exit. His agent, Pablo Barquero, who also represents Real Madrid legend Raúl Gonzalez, has been in talks with City regarding an extension, but no agreement has been reached thus far. City is reportedly willing to elevate Rodri to the ranks of the club's highest earners, potentially matching the salary of star striker Erling Haaland. Yet, the allure of returning to Madrid, his hometown, and playing a pivotal role in Real Madrid’s sporting project could entice Rodri to make the move.

Real Madrid understands that Rodri will either renew with City or join them, and as such, the club is unwilling to engage in a bidding war. Madrid plans to bide its time until the current season concludes before making any decisive moves. With only two years left on his contract by then, and with the possibility of Pep Guardiola leaving Manchester City in 2025, Rodri might see this as the ideal moment to embark on a new chapter in his career. However, Los Blancos may have to part with a hefty sum, potentially exceeding €100 million (£85 million/$111 million), to bring him to the Santiago Bernabeu—similar to the amount they paid for Jude Bellingham.

Rodri has his sights set on wearing the No. 16 jersey at Real Madrid, currently worn by Endrick. However, the Brazilian teenager could inherit the No. 9 shirt from Kylian Mbappe, who might in turn take the No. 10 after Luka Modric departs the club next summer. This would leave the No. 16 available for Rodri, should he make the move to Madrid. Furthermore, this signing would bolster the number of Spaniards in the squad, a figure that has dwindled following the departures of Nacho Fernandez and Joselu to the Middle East.
